Carlson Hotels Worldwide worked together with the Kids in Need foundation in Iowa and local school officials in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to provide more than 3,500 activity bags to area children displaced by flooding. The tote bags contained a fun activity book, colored pencils, stickers, sunglasses or goggles.
Distribution of the bags was kicked off at a “Family Fun Night” at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids. “We’re very excited Taylor students have an opportunity to see and play with many of their old friends that they’ve been separated from this year due to the flood and their school being closed. The PTA has plans to host several family events throughout this transition year. It’s a great way to bring the community together and build relationships for a bright future,” said Brian Christoffersen, principal at Taylor Elementary School, which is closed because of flooding. Students from Taylor have been attending 23 different elementary schools in the district, this year.
Mark Hughes, general manager and Amanda Turner, sales manager at the Country Inn & Suites By Carlson in Cedar Rapids helped with the distribution of the bags at the event, “We’re excited and honored to be involved with such a great community event that allows students and their families the opportunity to enjoy time together with friends they may not have seen for a while due to the flood and the school being closed.”
“We wanted to provide a multi-purpose tote bag with some fun items that can help bring cheer to the kids who may have lost some of their prized possessions,” said Baron Carr, vice president of Brand Marketing for Carlson Hotels Worldwide, who donated the bags on behalf of their Radisson Hotels & Resorts and Country Inns & Suites By Carlson brands.
The bag donation is part of a larger effort by Carlson Hotels Worldwide to not only provide relief for hurricane victims, but to reach out to community groups including the YMCA, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, La Escuelita and Latina youth. In Texas, Carlson worked with the American Red Cross to distribute more than 4,300 activity bags in shelters to children displaced by Hurricane Ike in Houston and San Antonio. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, more than 10,500 bags are being given to inner city children involved in programs after school and through the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities, and to Latino youth and Girl Scouts at La Escuelita. .
Minneapolis-based Carlson Hotels Worldwide operates Regent Hotels & Resorts; Radisson Hotels & Resorts®; Park Plaza® Hotels & Resorts; Country Inns & Suites By Carlson(SM) and Park Inn®. The company’s overall donation effort throughout the end of the year totals more than $300,000.
