Four outstanding Roanoke students have been named 2009-10 Virginia’s Future Leaders Scholarship winners by Cox Communications and the Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association (VCTA). Recipients and the college or university they will attend include:

* Kathryn Norbo, University of Virginia

These scholarships were among 73 awarded to Virginia students this year with a total of over $100,000 in scholarships awarded by local cable systems across the Commonwealth in partnership with the Donald A. Perry Foundation.

This year’s ‘Virginia’s Future Leaders’ scholarship recipients and their families were honored at the VCTA Annual Scholarship Luncheon held in Charlottesville, VA, at the Boar’s Head Inn in July.

Now in its 10th year, the Virginia’s Future Leaders Scholarship program is a statewide education initiative of the Virginia cable industry. To date over $700,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Virginia students attending Virginia colleges and universities.

The 2009-10 call for Virginia’s Future Leaders Scholarship applications will be available in early 2010. Cox Communications encourages Roanoke area students to visit the VCTA website in January at www.vcta.com for additional information and to apply.

Cox Communications and History(TM) are partnering on the Second Annual Take a Veteran to School Day outreach initiative. This effort links veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities across America. The event will take place on Veteran’s Day which is Tuesday, November 11, 2008. It will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Jane H. Bryan Elementary School, 1021 North Mallory Street in Hampton, Virginia. Veterans and enlisted personnel from the area will participate in the program to share stories of their service with the students and faculty members.

“This program will provide a great opportunity for the exchange of information between our Veterans and young people. The hope is that through this effort, the students will gain a greater appreciation for our freedoms and for those who worked so hard to secure them. This activity will include participation by representatives from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard, as well as World War II veterans,” said Gary McCollum, Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Cox Communications and HISTORY will provide dog-tags, tee shirts and bracelets to share with students to commemorate this occasion. Curriculum-based educational materials also are being provided to schools as well as a Veterans Day video produced with the U.S. Department of Education. In 2007, HISTORY enlisted more than 350 schools in all 50 states to participate in the program.

Dr. Vatara Slade, Principal, Jane Bryan Elementary said, “This very special celebration provides an opportunity for our students, staff and community to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of all United States veterans and enlisted service men and women. It is so important for our students to understand the history of Veteran’s Day, and to honor our veterans who have served the Country with pride as well as the service men and women who also are working on our behalf today.”

Underscoring this initiative is a call to action for citizens to support veterans from all wars by donating to not-for-profit organizations that provide medical care, counseling and aid to families of veterans. The public can do so by visiting www.veterans.com, the official site for the initiative and portal to several different not-for-profit organizations, including the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Armed Services YMCA, who were both involved in the first year of the program. A new partner this year is VetDogs, which helps those who have served our country honorably to live with dignity and independence whether they are visually impaired or have other special needs, by using guide dogs, service dogs, and innovative technologies. History will donate a total of $50,000 among these organizations as part of its commitment.

Thunderhead, recognized innovators in document automation and multi-channel communications solutions, today announced that its platform was selected by Money Management International (MMI) to power sophisticated customer correspondence for MMI’s family of Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) agencies.

The largest nonprofit, full-service credit-counseling agency in the US, MMI selected the Thunderhead NOW platform due to its standards-based open architecture, business user-centric design and flexible support for both print and multi-channel, electronic output.

Houston, Texas-based MMI has provided over 600,000 consumers annually with professional financial guidance, including credit and bankruptcy counseling, debt management assistance and other educational services. The company sought to replace a homegrown application with a more scalable, flexible solution that would integrate rapidly with its customized core systems, support the corporation’s growth and enhance customer loyalty.

According to Darren Schumaker, MMI director of applications and information technology, the Thunderhead NOW platform will enable the company to improve the quality and professionalism of its communications with current and prospective customers across multiple languages and various media, such as the Web, email, fax and traditional print mail. “Thunderhead’s superior technology, broad functionality and reliable support team made the solution an easy choice for us, and we look forward to completing the implementation,” he said. “Thunderhead went the extra mile to earn our business.”

Following implementation, Thunderhead NOW will further enable MMI to ensure legal and regulatory compliance, content accuracy and overall conformity with MMI’s corporate brand. MMI will also be integrating Thunderhead NOW with its IBM FileNet Enterprise Content Management (ECM) software, which means that all consumer correspondence can be automatically archived for record-keeping and fast retrieval by customer support.

“Companies like MMI need next-generation technologies that will improve their ability to engage with customers by delivering high-quality, personalized communications in real time. They are also seeking solutions that will easily integrate with existing core systems and provide out-of-the-box support for other enterprise standards, like those provided by IBM ECM,” said Glen Manchester, CEO of Thunderhead. “We are thrilled that MMI has selected Thunderhead NOW to help take its business to the next level.”

SoundBite Communications, Inc. announced that its integrated, multi-channel Intelligent Communications Platform has been effective in helping student loan originators, servicers, guarantors and collection agencies contact and communicate with student loan borrowers. These organizations need to use a combination of voice, email and text messaging communications in order to increase penetration and response rates, especially given the mobility of today’s borrowers.

Student loan organizations that implement a multi-channel communications strategy can choose the most appropriate method for communicating with student borrowers based on the message content, as well as the borrower’s preference. The addition of text messaging in particular — which traditionally has been under-utilized for business communications — can increase response rates, as the student demographic uses it frequently for personal communications.

According to the 2008 CTIA Semi-Annual Wireless Industry Survey, 75 billion text messages were sent in June 2008, up 160 percent over the same period one year ago. This demonstrates the viability and power of this communications channel, particularly among the student population, many of which only have a mobile phone.

“SoundBite offers a robust text messaging solution that includes a Free-to-End-User option, making it possible to deliver text messages without consumers incurring any cost,” said Mark Friedman, chief marketing and business development officer at SoundBite. “When used as part of an integrated, multi-channel communications strategy that includes voice and email, we have been able to help our clients achieve higher response rates — whether the goal was to collect more debt or follow up on loan applications.”

SoundBite Communications will be hosting a webinar on October 9, 2000 at 4:00pm ET/1:00pm PT to illustrate the various strategies that can be deployed to communicate with today’s student borrowers. Todd Tallman, co-chair of the Student Loan Service Alliance Private Loan Collections Subcommittee and collections operations manager at Iowa Student Loan Liquidity Corp. will be a guest speaker. To learn more about the webinar and to register, please visit: http://www.SoundBite.com/student.

SoundBite will also be exhibiting at the Consumer Bankers Association 2008 Student Lending Conference, December 3-5, 2008 at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City in Arlington, Va.
