Cox Communications and History(TM) are partnering on the Second Annual Take a Veteran to School Day outreach initiative. This effort links veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities across America. The event will take place on Veteran’s Day which is Tuesday, November 11, 2008. It will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Jane H. Bryan Elementary School, 1021 North Mallory Street in Hampton, Virginia. Veterans and enlisted personnel from the area will participate in the program to share stories of their service with the students and faculty members.

“This program will provide a great opportunity for the exchange of information between our Veterans and young people. The hope is that through this effort, the students will gain a greater appreciation for our freedoms and for those who worked so hard to secure them. This activity will include participation by representatives from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard, as well as World War II veterans,” said Gary McCollum, Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Cox Communications and HISTORY will provide dog-tags, tee shirts and bracelets to share with students to commemorate this occasion. Curriculum-based educational materials also are being provided to schools as well as a Veterans Day video produced with the U.S. Department of Education. In 2007, HISTORY enlisted more than 350 schools in all 50 states to participate in the program.

Dr. Vatara Slade, Principal, Jane Bryan Elementary said, “This very special celebration provides an opportunity for our students, staff and community to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of all United States veterans and enlisted service men and women. It is so important for our students to understand the history of Veteran’s Day, and to honor our veterans who have served the Country with pride as well as the service men and women who also are working on our behalf today.”

Underscoring this initiative is a call to action for citizens to support veterans from all wars by donating to not-for-profit organizations that provide medical care, counseling and aid to families of veterans. The public can do so by visiting www.veterans.com, the official site for the initiative and portal to several different not-for-profit organizations, including the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Armed Services YMCA, who were both involved in the first year of the program. A new partner this year is VetDogs, which helps those who have served our country honorably to live with dignity and independence whether they are visually impaired or have other special needs, by using guide dogs, service dogs, and innovative technologies. History will donate a total of $50,000 among these organizations as part of its commitment.

It’s the Thanksgiving season, which is the perfect time to thank a teacher for all of the special things they do in their mission to educate local students and future generations. Mission Federal Credit Union, Junior Achievement, Cox Communications and Channel 4 San Diego have partnered to present the “I’m Thankful for My Teacher” campaign. The campaign is designed to give parents and children an opportunity to thank the teachers in their lives for their hard work, dedication, enthusiasm, support and willingness to go the extra mile for students and families throughout San Diego County.

“The ‘I’m Thankful For My Teacher’ initiative is extremely timely, given that California is suffering the harshest educational budget crisis in state history,” says Tricia Link, vice president of communications and community relations, Mission Federal Credit Union. “We’ve made it very easy for students and parents to participate and share their well-wishes and gratitude for teachers who are making a positive difference in their lives. In turn, we hope this effort will increase morale of teachers and education professionals who have been affected by budget cuts and unemployment worries for some time now.” Link also adds, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Junior Achievement, Cox Communications and Channel 4 San Diego, organizations who share our commitment to supporting local education initiatives.”

To participate, the public is encouraged to stop by any Mission Federal Credit Union branch or any Cox store between November 1 and 30, 2008, to pick-up, fill out and drop-off a postcard that prompts parents and kids to fill out “why they are thankful for their teacher.” The contest is open to children in kindergarten through grade 12, who attend any public, private, or home school located within the borders of San Diego County. At the end of the campaign, Junior Achievement staff and volunteers will tally the results and deliver all thank you postcards to teachers throughout the San Diego region, for additional recognition for our teachers.

The top six winning elementary, middle, and high school teachers receiving the most thank you cards will receive a Westfield Shoppingtown gift card to reward themselves for all of their hard work. To boost participation, the students in the class of the winning teachers will receive a fun classroom party or fieldtrip of their choice and the invaluable gift of Junior Achievement’s award-winning financial education curriculum taught in their classroom for an entire school year, compliments of Mission Federal Credit Union. Special honorable mention prizes are planned for ten additional deserving teachers. All winning teachers will be notified the week of December 7, 2008.
