Mar-Bal, Inc., a Chagrin Falls, Ohio-based leader in the thermoset industry, introduces the Fire-Gard(TM) Product Family. This new line of products includes Mar-Bal’s current fire resistant wastebaskets, branded as Waste-Safe(TM).

An industry leader for almost 40 years, Mar-Bal, operates manufacturing facilities in Ohio, Virginia and Missouri. The new Fire-Gard family of products will be manufactured in Mar-Bal’s Chagrin Falls, Ohio and Cuba, Missouri facilities.

Waste-Safe(TM) Fire Resistant Wastebaskets are UL listed and are an essential product for college residential halls, hotels, hospitals, offices, classrooms and laboratories. Made from thermoset material with fiberglass reinforcement, the wastebaskets are available in three (3) sizes and five (5) different colors; and can be imprinted with permanent silk screening to customize the product. Additionally, the corrosion and rust proof, seamless construction will not leak like metal, is easy-to-clean and provides for a low cost solution compared to metal wastebaskets.

There are 18,000,000 students enrolled in 4,100 colleges and universities in the U.S. Approximately 20 students die in campus fires annually due to the careless disposal of smoking materials, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

“Mar-Bal is working with the Center for Campus Fire Safety to raise awareness of students, parents, and administrators about the importance of campus fire safety and the steps they can take to prevent the needless loss of life,” says Stan Pilat, Director of Sales & Marketing. “Ron Poff, our new Manager of New Business Development, will lead our effort.”

Mar-Bal’s new product family provides a stylish but fire-safe waste product that addresses the issue of improper disposal of materials that can result in fire.

“We have successfully introduced the value of this product with several major universities,” continues Mr. Pilat. Michigan State, Penn State, and Purdue University have all standardized on the Waste-Safe fire resistant wastebaskets.

“We have been using round metal trash receptacles in our student rooms,” says Sue Petrisin, Administrative Associate, Construction, Maintenance and Interior Design Michigan State University. “Over time, they not only dent easily, they also rust and leave a metal stain ring on the floor. The Mar-Bal wastebaskets, on the other hand, provide a higher level of fire safety and blend better with the school’s room furnishings. In addition, they reduce preventative maintenance costs caused by rusty and bent cans. As we replace the round trash cans, the Mar-Bal wastebasket is our preferred product,” Ms. Petrisin adds.

Mar-Bal will introduce additional products under the Fire-Gard family later this year. These products will further serve the hotel industry as well as colleges and universities.

For more information on Mar-Bal’s line of Fire-Gard products please visit www.mar-bal.com/wastebasket.htm or contact us at: (440) 543-7526.

Headquartered in Chagrin Falls, OH, Mar-Bal, Inc. has been an innovative leader in the custom composite, molding and material manufacturing industry since its founding in 1970. The Tostitos brand crowned six die-hard University of Texas fans champions of this year’s Tostitos “Race to the Bowl” competition and awarded them $200,000 for their school’s general scholarship fund during the national broadcast of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Starting on New Year’s Eve in New York City, a team of fans from Ohio State University and the University of Texas embarked on a cross-country dash to Glendale, Ariz. – home of the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl – with stops along the way in Columbus, Ohio, Austin, Texas and Las Vegas where they competed in a variety of challenges to test their school pride and spirit. The winning team was announced, along with a highlights presentation of the entire journey, during the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl halftime show, which was televised nationally on FOX Sports.

As a long-time supporter of college football and the Fiesta Bowl, the Tostitos brand created its “Race to the Bowl” as a tribute to the ultimate true-blue college football fans and the friendships that can be fostered over the mutual devotion to their team. Tostitos recognizes the truly devoted fans as college football’s unsung heroes and rewarded the most devoted Buckeye and Longhorn fans with the trip of a lifetime with their friends to the 2009 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and the chance to give back to their school with a scholarship contribution.

Emotions ran high as the winners were announced before the enthusiastic crowd at the University of Phoenix Stadium, and were presented with a surprise, final challenge – correctly answer one trivia question testing the team’s knowledge about past Fiesta Bowl appearances by the Longhorn football team for the chance to double the prize for their school’s scholarship fund. Following a quick team deliberation, the team of true-blue fans provided the correct answer, winning the ultimate prize of $200,000 for the University of Texas general scholarship fund.

“The Tostitos brand congratulates the winning team of University of Texas fans and we are thrilled to present them with a $200,000 scholarship for their university,” said Ann Mukherjee, group vice president, marketing, Frito-Lay North America. “What an amazing journey this has been for these groups of friends, and it has been great to see the passion and school pride from both teams. We have always seen college football as a unique opportunity that brings friends together to share fun, memorable experiences and we hope both teams of true-blue fans will remember their ‘Race to the Bowl’ as one of their highlights of 2009. We congratulate both teams on a job well done.”

The Tostitos “Race to the Bowl” put six die-hard Ohio State University fans head-to-head against six ultimate University of Texas fans in a race across America to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and a chance to win $100,000 for their school’s general scholarship fund. The race kicked off on New Year’s Eve day in New York City where teams faced-off for their first challenge – a football passing drill against the backdrop of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, and then performing their school’s fight songs to earn “tips” from the public. The teams then traveled to their respective college towns for a test of hometown school spirit that had teams recruiting local fans to have their faces painted in school colors as the truest demonstration of school pride. Next, the teams competed in a football scoring competition at Planet Hollywood on The Strip in Las Vegas and then raced to Glendale, Ariz., where they completed a football training camp-style obstacle course before crossing the finish line inside the University of Phoenix Stadium.

“This entire experience has been nothing short of amazing. After hearing about the ‘Race to the Bowl,’ I knew we had to compete as we’re the loudest, most die-hard group of Longhorn fans. We definitely proved it this week,” said Dani Peebles, captain of the team of University of Texas fans. “We’re so thankful to Tostitos for not only giving us the opportunity of lifetime, but also allowing us to give back to our school. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to cheer on the Longhorns in the Fiesta Bowl.

The winning team members and their home towns include:

* Tiffany Fogarty, Austin, TX
* Shawn Fogarty, Austin, TX
* Scott Hauptmann, Kyle, TX
* Jeffrey Judkins, Austin, TX
* Megan Luther, Austin, TX
* Dani Peebles, Austin, TX

In addition to the $200,000 scholarship presented to the University of Texas, the Tostitos brand also will award a $50,000 scholarship to Ohio State University on behalf of its team of die-hard fans that competed in the Tostitos “Race to the Bowl.”

Between November 26 and December 14, 2008 the Tostitos “Race to the Bowl” received more than 1,000 entries from true-blue college football fans who boasted their unwavering school pride and spirit. Entries were submitted through the official Tostitos “Race to the Bowl” Facebook page and the competing teams were determined by a panel of Tostitos judges.

Fans can view recaps of the race by visiting the official Tostitos “Race to the Bowl” Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/TostitosRaceToTheBowl.

Ohio is pioneering the development of “green collar” workers and creating new business opportunities by offering the state’s first masters degree program in advanced energy. According to the Ohio Business Development Coalition, the nonprofit organization that markets the state for capital investment, Ohio’s universities and colleges are preparing a gearing up to meet the need for skilled green collar workers through the new programs. The state’s long history of manufacturing excellence and large pool of skilled workers create an ideal environment for the growing number of jobs related to advanced energy.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20071107/CLW113LOGO )

Several Ohio universities are participating in the advanced energy masters degree program. Degrees will be awarded by the University of Dayton and Wright State University, and classes also will be held at Central State University and the Air Force Institute of Technology. Students can enroll in the two-year program on a full-time or part-time basis starting next month.

Companies like Lewis Center-based NexTech Materials, which manufactures active components for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), says the advanced energy masters degree program will give students the kind of training they need to succeed in a global economy.

“This program will be a huge benefit not only to Ohio students, but also to the businesses throughout the state operating in the advanced energy industries,” said Bill Dawson, president and chief executive officer of NexTech Materials. “Students can be trained and gain access to jobs without having to look out of state. At the same time, it will be easier for companies working in fuel cells and other advanced energy sources to recruit the best possible workforce.”

Ohio’s direct market access to renewable energy consumers and state-sponsored programs are helping companies develop and launch the next generation of advanced energy technologies and compete even more effectively in a global economy. Through initiatives such as Ohio Governor Ted Strickland’s Energy, Jobs and Progress plan, announced in 2007, Ohio is modernizing its energy infrastructure, ensuring affordable and stable energy prices and attracting renewable energy jobs of the future through an Advanced Energy Portfolio Standard.

One of the most significant initiatives supporting Ohio’s renewable energy industry and future job force is the state’s Third Frontier Project, a 10-year, $1.6 billion initiative to help catalyze connections between companies and academia. The project is the state’s largest-ever commitment to expand high-tech research capabilities, promote innovation, company formation and create high-paying jobs. Many of those jobs will be filled by Ohio’s developing green collar workforce.

“Ohio is at the heart of next-generation, advanced energy industry success,” said Ed Burghard, executive director of the Ohio Business Development Coalition. “In addition to the development of a highly skilled workforce to meet the ever-growing green collar industry demands, Ohio-based companies benefit from the state’s continued effort to focus on creating a profit-friendly business environment through revamped tax and tort laws. Companies in Ohio also enjoy the bottom-line benefits that come from better employee work:life balance. Ohio offers low-cost, low stress communities and a unique tapestry of micropolitan and metropolitan cities. This diversity provides executives and employees the resources and time to make any ambition achievable. Ohio truly is the state of perfect balance.”

Students in Ohio are participating in a worldwide research project that will focus on the effects that snow and ice have on the Earth’s temperature.

December 1-19 students and teachers from 38 Ohio schools will be taking measurements of the Earth’s surface temperature, snow depth and cloud type and coverage to help scientists understand how humans are affecting the Earth’s climate.

Studying the Earth’s surface temperature is vital to comprehending if an altered landscape, with such variables as the construction of new buildings, roads or parking lots, warms the planet and inherently changes the environment.

The GLOBE Surface Temperature Research Project involves thousands of students and teachers from Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Alaska — in addition to Estonia, Poland, Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago.

The project is led by the University of Toledo and grassroots satellite technology education organization, OhioView. It is funded by the Ohio Board of Regents, NASA, and part of the SATELLITES (Students and Teachers Exploring Local Landscapes to Interpret the Earth from Space) program.

About GLOBE

The GLOBE Surface Temperature Research Project is an international, hands-on, primary and secondary school-based education program to study the Earth’s surface temperature and how humans are affecting Earth’s climate. Started in1995 as a joint educational program between NASA, NOAA and NSF the program is now in 111 countries around the world with the participation of 20,000 teachers. For more information visit www.globe.gov.

Global building materials and composite solutions leader Owens Corning announced the formation of a strategic alliance to provide solutions that help communities reduce energy use by up to 50 percent and CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent versus standard developments. The Alliance, which is focused on developers, campuses and entire communities, includes Owens Corning, MVV decon GmbH, an international consulting subsidiary of the Mannheim-based German company MVV Energiedienstleistungen GmbH, and Garforth International, LLC, a Toledo and Brussels, Belgium-based provider of energy productivity solutions.

“This integrated, holistic approach dramatically reduces the environmental impact of entire communities by focusing both on the way energy is distributed and enhancements to the energy efficiency of the buildings themselves,” said Frank O’Brien-Bernini, chief sustainability officer for Owens Corning. “Given that more than 40 percent of the energy used in the United States is for buildings — which is more than industry and more than transportation — these kinds of step changes are fundamental for us to make a significant impact in improving the performance of our homes and commercial buildings.”

“Climate protection interests and high energy prices have created a clear mandate for reducing energy and raw materials use,” said Michael Lowak, General Manager for MVV Energiedienstleistungen GmbH . “By delivering on our mission, this international team will help drive sustainable development by providing energy-supply solutions specifically tailored to the community that reduce costs both today and tomorrow. We already have a wide range of experience in this field gained from numerous international projects.”

Peter Garforth, CEO of Garforth International, LLC., agreed. “We have created a team with world-class expertise, and we’re applying it on a local scale,” said Garforth “We are already making things happen, delivering major benefits at acceptable costs, and truly transforming communities.”

With the launch, the Alliance is embarking on a number of initiatives, ranging from college campuses in Ohio to a community in Urumqi, China, with the primary focus on new and renovated communities in North America. When complete, the Integrated Energy Master Plan that serves as the basis for the implementation plans for these communities includes the detailed pathway to:

– Reduce energy demand, ranging from 25 to 50 percent, compared to the typical building-by-building approach to improving energy efficiency.

– Use smaller equipment to heat or cool the buildings, thus reducing cost and waste in the project.

– Reduce the need for each building to operate as an island, allowing peak loading for the system to be distributed among all the buildings and reducing the overall peak loads and energy waste.

– Decrease greenhouse gas emissions of up to 80 percent compared to business as usual energy use and delivery approaches.
