U.S. News Media Group announced the launch of U.S. News University Directory, an online portal focused entirely on higher education and professional and continuing education opportunities.

Complementing the U.S. News rankings, the long-preferred tool for the assessment of excellence in higher education, the University Directory helps potential college-bound students and working adults further invest in their future by serving as an online marketplace where they can directly interact with colleges and universities.

The new portal – distinct from USNews.com – will provide consumers with a full range of education options, including information about both online and offline educational institutions, and will provide educational institutions with an opportunity to showcase their degree and certificate programs in a co-branded forum jointly created by U.S. News Media Group, America’s Authority on Education®, and Bisk Education, the country’s leading facilitator of online degree and certificate programs from some of America’s leading universities.

The University Directory organizes schools in multiple ways including an alphabetical directory of ranked and unranked schools in various categories. “Not everyone is looking for a ranked school,” said Brian Kelly, Editor of U.S. News. “While the University Directory has ranking information, it also provides a resource for many different kinds of students.”

The site also includes interactive features and expanded sorting abilities, and will present content about degree and certificate programs from U.S. News & World Report’s vast collection of the News You Can Use® service journalism that has justifiably made it the leading source of news and information about educational opportunities in the United States. It will also feature informative content focused on providing information to consumers who are actively looking for educational opportunities.

“U.S. News & World Report is the leading resource – both in print and online – for students looking at college as well as adults searching for continuing education opportunities, and we wanted to create a website focused on these consumers and institutions,” said Bill Holiber, president of U.S. News Media Group. “With Bisk Education, we found a company focused on online education with state-of-the-art technology and capabilities to create a dynamic education-focused portal. Their proven success in working with colleges and universities to bring their schools’ online degree and certificate programs to students made for a natural collaboration.”

Holiber explained that USNews.com – the U.S. News Media Group’s flagship website – will continue to feature rankings and other college and graduate school information, along with the public policy analysis, money, and health content that has distinguished it as a leading provider of information for consumers. “However, we realized that we needed to create a site with navigation and design that was focused specifically on consumers who were in the market for higher education opportunities,” Holiber said.

As part of the partnership, all advertising from colleges and universities at USNews.com and the University Directory will be sold by Bisk under the U.S. News brand. “Higher education institutions need a credible and trustworthy marketplace in which they can showcase educational opportunities and connect with potential students that are suited to their programs,” said Nathan Bisk, Founder and Chairman of Bisk Education. “For the past 15 years, we have been at the forefront of creating and executing online and distance-learning marketing and recruitment campaigns for some of the nation’s leading universities. We know how to market in the digital age and we understand the need to protect the integrity of each institution’s brand while helping them connect with qualified students. The new U.S. News Directory will allow educational institutions the opportunity to meet the ever increasing demand for university based education and workforce retraining that is in such demand in today’s economy.”

Ashford University announced that it has partnered with “Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” to award more than $2 million in full-ride online college scholarships to working moms and dads. “Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” is a national scholarship initiative that aims to help remove the barriers of money, time and confidence, which often keep people from returning to school.

“Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” is the third in a line of campaigns to help working parents return to school to better their lives and the lives of their families. The two previous Project Working Mom campaigns in 2008 received more than 120,000 applications, awarded more than $4 million in scholarships, and sent nearly 100 working moms back to school. This year, the campaign has added dads to the mix as a result of considerable interest from fathers during the first two campaigns.

This is the second Project Working Mom campaign for Ashford University. Ten previous scholarships were awarded in September 2008 and all scholarship recipients are now currently enrolled in Ashford University online degree programs. An additional 10 full-ride online college scholarships will be awarded in May 2009.

“When we first agreed to participate in the Project Working Mom 2 campaign last summer, we had no idea how much interest there would be in the program,” said Elizabeth Tice, Ashford University’s Provost. “The fact that we received more than 25,000 applications at Ashford University alone clearly illustrates the importance of education to working mothers across America, and that’s something we just couldn’t ignore. We’re excited to be a part of the Project Working Mom 3 campaign and look forward to receiving applications, not just from moms this time but from dads as well.”

Ashford University is one of five universities participating in “Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” Combined, Ashford and the other four participating schools will be awarding approximately 60 full-ride online college scholarships worth more than $2 million, bringing the total of Project Working Mom scholarships awarded to more than $6 million.

“Project Working Mom started as a single campaign to help working moms go back to school, but the response was so large that we decided to launch another campaign,” said Helen MacDermott, content director for Project Working Mom. “This time, however, in response to the voices of many dads, we have added a father-focused element.”

eLearners.com, an online education resource that connects learners with online education and created the Project Working Mom campaigns, also created a complementary, interactive, and in-depth web site to help learners tackle their questions and fears about returning to school. The site is designed to empower working parents and offers advice on going back to school, self-assessment quizzes on numerous subjects including how to determine what subjects to study, an online support community, numerous articles, and a database with $15 billion in financial aid opportunities.

“This campaign is a much needed resource for many moms and dads who would love to pursue a new career path, but don’t have the money to get the degree they need,” said Carey Casey, CEO of the Kansas City-based National Center for Fathering and fathers.com. “Many dads I’ve talked with would love to go back to school, but they don’t know where to begin and for many the biggest barrier is definitely cost. It’s great to see action underway to help remove these barriers.”

The full-ride online college scholarships through “Project Working Mom…and Dads Too!” are for online programs from the associate’s to Ph.D. level. To apply for a scholarship, working moms and dads may submit a short application at www.projectworkingmom.com. They will also need to complete an essay with their life, education and/or career goals and explain how an online education will allow them to achieve those goals. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 30, 2009.

eLearners.com, a web resource of EducationDynamics, announced the launch of its comprehensive resource that helps answer questions about accredited online computer science degrees. The “Mini-Guide to Computer Science Degrees” is located at http://www.elearners.com/guide/guide-to-an-online-degree-in-computer-science.asp.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the job market for computer science professionals is one of the fastest growing among all professions. Computer science-related and data administration jobs are going to increase by about 37 percent between 2006 and 2016. This is one of the highest rates among all professions; and the good news is these jobs pay well. Salary.com shows the average salary for a business system analyst is $49,000 and a Software Engineering Manager makes about $114,000.

“With the current economy on shaky ground, many people are second guessing their careers and looking to jobs in technology, which are always in demand,” said Terrence Thomas, EVP Marketing Operations at EducationDynamics. “Education is the bridge to those new jobs and computer science degrees, specifically, are a hot commodity.”

eLearners.com’s “Mini-Guide to Computer Science Degrees” is a simple-to-navigate and comprehensive resource to help current and prospective students learn more about online computer science programs. The guide covers a variety of topics including:

– What is computer science about?
– Is a computer science degree right for me?
– What kind of employers hire computer science degree holders?
– What careers can I qualify for with an online degree in computer science?
– What courses might I take for an online degree in computer science?

In addition to the “Mini-Guide to Computer Science Degrees,” eLearners.com offers a comprehensive database of programs and information for students to determine if attending an online college is right for them, including the eLearners Advisor, an assessment that measures online learning compatibility with the prospective online learner. In addition, with the current credit crunch, eLearners.com’s Student Loans and Financial Aid Center can help students find financial support, including the Debt-Free College Guide and online scholarships with more than $14 billion in financial aid.

Counseling is one of the country’s fastest growing professions, driving an accompanying need for doctoral degree programs and faculty to educate counselors and specially educated professionals to oversee counselors. In response, Capella University , an accredited* online university that has built its reputation by providing quality graduate education for working adults, has launched a new online PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision.

“There is a growing need for counseling faculty and supervisors, yet there are very few opportunities for mental health professionals to meet the educational standards of this field within an online program,” said Margo Weiss, PhD, assistant dean of Capella’s School of Human Services. “We have developed a rigorous curriculum that includes residencies and field experience in addition to online course work. We believe that one advantage of our program is that we offer the only online master’s specializations in counseling that are CACREP-accredited, providing our online PhD students with the opportunity to potentially fulfill their internship experience by working with our master’s-level counseling students.”

The new PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision leverages Capella’s experience and faculty expertise in both mental health and higher education. Capella offers more than two dozen graduate specializations in counseling, psychology, and related fields, as well as more than a dozen specializations specifically focused on the field of higher education.

eLearners.com, a web resource of EducationDynamics, announced its comprehensive resource to help prospective and current students avoid diploma mills. Diploma mills pose online as a legitimate university and then take advantage of unsuspecting students by offering programs. To help students, eLearners.com offers resources on how to spot a diploma mill program, located at http://www.elearners.com/resources/diploma-mills.asp.

The deceitful practices were alarming enough that President George Bush signed the “College Opportunity and Affordability Act” into law on August 14, 2008, which includes the establishment of a Diploma Mill Task Force. The task force will create a plan to help eradicate the sale and use of fake degrees, but until that plan is in action students need to watch out for deceptive practices.

“Diploma mills just want your money and don’t care if you get the education you are looking for to advance your career,” said Terrence Thomas, EVP Marketing Operations at EducationDynamics. “Online education is a perfect solution for many people, but you have to make sure the program you sign up for is accredited. In today’s tight economy every dollar counts, so make sure you’re spending money on a degree that’s part of a legitimate program.”

Although it is hard to determine an exact number of diploma mills, John Bear, an author and expert in the field of distance learning, said that in 2004 there were more than 300 unaccredited universities. To help spot a diploma mill and not pay money to a bogus institution, eLearners.com offers these tips:

– Research the University. Many diploma mills will use names similar to popular colleges and universities. They will also often use .edu domain names, however anyone can register a website with edu. Also, it is very important to make sure the college is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.
– Check the Address History. A fake school will frequently change its address, often moving from state to state.
– Check for Errors. Materials sent from diploma mills often have spelling and grammatical errors.
– Be Wary of Quick Degrees. Diploma mills often overemphasize how quickly students can receive a degree.
– Pay Close Attention to the Admissions Process. If there is no selectivity in the admissions process or any questions about test scores or academic history, you may be applying to a diploma mill.
– Class Interaction. Accredited colleges and universities offer student and professor/faculty interaction. If there is hardly any interaction this should be a warning sign.
– Vague Degree Requirements. Diploma mills often don’t outline their degree requirements and are vague about class descriptions and credit hours needed to complete a program.
– Tuition and Fees. Accredited colleges and universities generally charge tuition and fess on a per-class basis, but diploma mills will often charge on a per-degree basis.
– Use Legitimate Online Resources. Sites such as eLearners.com do the legwork for you to determine what schools are phony and do not host information on unaccredited schools.

“No one deserves to be fooled by guessing about a school’s legitimacy and we are committed to helping students overcome that obstacle,” continued Thomas. “All colleges and universities offering online degrees on eLearners.com are fully accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or Council for Higher Education Accreditation, so we are a safe source, giving people peace of mind while searching for an online degree program.”

At eLearners.com, people can also test their diploma mill knowledge by taking the eLearners.com “Real or Fake?” quiz. The quiz tests to see if one can tell the difference between legitimate schools and diploma mills. The quiz is located at http://www.elearners.com/back-to-school/fun-stuff/player.html. eLearners.com also offers information on how to protect against a diploma mill and offers accreditation resources.

For more information on how to avoid diploma mills and to search for accredited online colleges and universities visit onto www.eLearners.com.
