These scholarships were among 73 awarded to Virginia students this year with a total of over $100,000 in scholarships awarded by local cable systems across the Commonwealth in partnership with the Donald A. Perry Foundation.

This year’s ‘Virginia’s Future Leaders’ scholarship recipients and their families were honored at the VCTA Annual Scholarship Luncheon held in Charlottesville, VA, at the Boar’s Head Inn in July.

Now in its 10th year, the Virginia’s Future Leaders Scholarship program is a statewide education initiative of the Virginia cable industry. To date over $700,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Virginia students attending Virginia colleges and universities.

The 2009-10 call for Virginia’s Future Leaders Scholarship applications will be available in early 2010. Cox Communications encourages Roanoke area students to visit the VCTA website in January at www.vcta.com for additional information and to apply.

Cox Communications and History(TM) are partnering on the Second Annual Take a Veteran to School Day outreach initiative. This effort links veterans of all ages with young people in our schools and communities across America. The event will take place on Veteran’s Day which is Tuesday, November 11, 2008. It will begin at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Jane H. Bryan Elementary School, 1021 North Mallory Street in Hampton, Virginia. Veterans and enlisted personnel from the area will participate in the program to share stories of their service with the students and faculty members.

“This program will provide a great opportunity for the exchange of information between our Veterans and young people. The hope is that through this effort, the students will gain a greater appreciation for our freedoms and for those who worked so hard to secure them. This activity will include participation by representatives from the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Coast Guard, the National Guard, as well as World War II veterans,” said Gary McCollum, Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Cox Communications and HISTORY will provide dog-tags, tee shirts and bracelets to share with students to commemorate this occasion. Curriculum-based educational materials also are being provided to schools as well as a Veterans Day video produced with the U.S. Department of Education. In 2007, HISTORY enlisted more than 350 schools in all 50 states to participate in the program.

Dr. Vatara Slade, Principal, Jane Bryan Elementary said, “This very special celebration provides an opportunity for our students, staff and community to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of all United States veterans and enlisted service men and women. It is so important for our students to understand the history of Veteran’s Day, and to honor our veterans who have served the Country with pride as well as the service men and women who also are working on our behalf today.”

Underscoring this initiative is a call to action for citizens to support veterans from all wars by donating to not-for-profit organizations that provide medical care, counseling and aid to families of veterans. The public can do so by visiting www.veterans.com, the official site for the initiative and portal to several different not-for-profit organizations, including the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Armed Services YMCA, who were both involved in the first year of the program. A new partner this year is VetDogs, which helps those who have served our country honorably to live with dignity and independence whether they are visually impaired or have other special needs, by using guide dogs, service dogs, and innovative technologies. History will donate a total of $50,000 among these organizations as part of its commitment.

Nexient Learning Inc. Canada’s largest corporate skills development company, announced that Managing Matters, a leadership development program created by Nexient Learning and Rogers Communications Inc., has garnered gold honours from the Canadian Society for Training and Development’s (CSTD) 2008 Canadian Awards for Training Excellence.

The CSTD, Canada’s largest association dedicated to training and HR development, selected Managing Matters based on five criteria: originality, instructional design, evaluation strategy, packaging and communication style.

“The CSTD is committed to honouring innovative, Canadian-developed training products and programs,” said Lynn Johnston, President, CSTD. “We received many wonderful submissions for the 2008 Awards and are pleased to recognize Rogers Communications and Nexient Learning for their outstanding Internal Learning Program Managing Matters with a Gold 2008 Canadian Award for Training Excellence.”

Managing Matters is Rogers’ first-ever national leadership development program and embodies Rogers’ leadership mandate through a customized application of Nexient’s leading edge intellectual property and expertise. It identifies and creates the next generation of Rogers’ management, giving them the skills to ensure the future growth and success of the organization. Taking a cross-functional approach to training, it brings people together from Rogers’ different lines of business to learn about the corporation’s direction, priorities and brands, and to reinforce the One Rogers culture.

“Several factors and elements make Managing Matters a unique and effective leadership development program,” said Traci Wells, Senior Manager, Organizational Learning at Rogers. “For example, a five-day phased and blended curriculum is one way it offers more methods and more control over when and how participants learn.”

Jocelyn Bérard, Nexient’s Executive VP Leadership and Business Solutions, attributed the success of Managing Matters in part to unprecedented program support from Rogers’ executives. “In fact, Rogers’ CEO, Ted Rogers, promoted the benefits of the program in a video and numerous Senior executives, trained as ’storytellers’ are speaking to the importance of strong leadership, ensuring the future growth and success of Rogers.”

Results to date have been impressive, with significant enhancements in Rogers’ organizational culture, cohesion and engagement levels. Surveys have shown that engagement levels among the 275 managers who have completed the program have increased from 74% to 83% – 10 points above the best-in-class results. Management capacity also increased by six points from 2006 levels (77% from 71%), while growth and development rates experienced a 15-point spike (77% from 61%).

“Managing Matters is a perfect example of a leadership development program that is strongly connected to, and supportive of, the core business strategy,” added Bérard. “That shows both in the content and results. It demonstrates the critical need for HR professionals to understand business realities and align solutions to those realities. It also demonstrates the critical need for a strong working partnership between the corporate learning partner and the corporation.”

Rogers began offering a French version of the curriculum and website in April 2008 and has enrolled 750 managers in the program this year. Expectations are that 4,000 managers will have completed the program by 2011.
